Capela Nossa Senhora das Vitórias

This stunning piece of neo-Gothic architecture, unique throughout the archipelago was built at the end of the 19th century. The Nossa Senhora das Vitorias Capela reflects on the western shore of the Furnas Lagoon making it a scene for any keen or professional photographer.

This temple showcases a four storey tower with long and narrow Roman arches, sculpted capitals and an elegant spire. The interior boasts high ceilings with sculpted, square capitols columns which are a replication of the square, exterior colonnades that support the structure. A renowned Azorean who had a keen interest in literature and botany, known as José do Canto (1820-1898) is buried here.
