The Convento e Capela de Nossa Senhora da Esperança or Igreja do Senhor Santo Cristo is where you will find the magnificent statue of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, patron of the largest religious festival in the Azores.
The Convento e Capela de Nossa Senhora da Esperança were built in 1951 and are still run by nuns of the Order of São Francisco. This chapel is associated with the worship of the Cristo dos Milagres and where many treasures of religious art can be seen.
In this chapel there is also a statue that was brought to the island in the 16th century, and is stored in the lower part of the church. At certain times of the day can be visited, when a nun opens the gates and allows entry. During this visit you will also have the opportunity to admire the intricately embroidered ornaments, polished relics and sparkling jewels surrounding the statue.
