Forte de São Brás

The Forte de São Brás was built in the 16th century to defend the city against pirates and corsairs. It was the most important defence system the city had at the time as it was strategically situated on the west of Ponta Delgada.

Being located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores were frequently visited by pirates therefore to ensure early warning of these unwanted guests the Forte de São Brás was built.

During you time here enjoy a pleasant walk up to the high point overlooking the city of Ponta Delgada and explore the bastions and battlements that date back from the renaissance period. Beautiful panoramic views around this site so make sure your camera is fully charged.

Nowadays, this fort is used by the Portuguese Navy, being located here the Military Museum of the Azores.
